THE VIBRATO.

THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER OF LUTHIERES.

The Adirondacks - Lake Placid, NY

  • Adirondack Mountain Side.

My goal as the designer of The Vibrato, was to find an optimal location for the home of this hybrid college campus and learning/performing arts center.

The Adirondacks inhabit a diverse population of trees, wildlife, and resources. Luthiers depend on that wood for the carving of stringed instruments (Violins, guitars, cellos, mandolins, ect…) and these mountains host all the species used in the wood carving process. Including having a direct route to the busiest city in the US, New York City, allowing for more networking opportunities.

  • Topography.

Due to heavy snow coverage and avalanches, The Vibrato has been placed in the low elevations of a basin, adjacent from Lake Placid. Lake Placid holds a busy village that hosts winter olympics and has the proper means for being the link to The Vibrato.

The Vibrato celebrates The Adirondacks and would have the potential to gain traction not only with the locals, but also those attending events and enjoying the scenery.

  • New Construction Build.

The Vibrato stretches 400 sq ft. And it has the width of 350 sq ft. In addition to having a poured precast concrete roof structure and timber frame beams. It would have to be built ground up and have multiple parts shipped, which is why I chose the west side of the lake.

The interstate goes directly around that mound of the mountain and would allow for swift transportation.

The art of Lutherie.

Lutherie is the art of crafting wood stringed instruments. Ornate detail is highlighted using the wood given, carving out a musical entity that is passed on to generations. This form of art deserves a space celebrating the learning, performing and making of these skill sets.

Taking inspiration from the land.

The land is just as important as the skills used by Luthiers', both mold natural objects, creating a beautiful outcome. The Adirondacks are prime for being the birth place of The Vibrato, mirroring the delicate sweeps and curvatures of stringed instruments. The instruments in turn, allow the land to have a voice that would reverberate off of the walls and back into the mountains.

Beginning the design.

Having respect for the skills Luthiers poses and what the Adirondacks provide, The Vibrato meets at the junction of that respect.

The Vibrato blends with the surrounding landscape and imposes a new perspective to what a building can do for the land. Not just being there, but living there. Studying the topography, trees, animals, and composition of bedrock, I found that a lifted sweeping structure anchored by the land, would best represent both the land and The Vibrato.

Violin to The Vibrato.

The Design Process.

Having played the violin I began there. Studying it, I began drafting the swoops and indentations, the F-hole, the strings, and the internal chambers.

Making simple strokes, that began to outline the shell of the building. Compiling my drawings and overlaying them, I connected points of the sweeps that were soft, much like the rib on the violin.

The interior replicated where the sound bounced, based on the sound post ,bottom block location, and C-bout of my violin.

The 3D Visual Experience.

As a violin is played, you can feel the vibrations and hear the soul of the instrument. The soul purpose of The Vibrato, is to be the hub for individuals who craft these instruments. By creating a 3D visual of The Vibrato, it brings to life the true beauty and nature of Architecture. Giving it the chance to see the building and hear it’s soul.
