THIRD WARD WRITER’S CONDO

Milwaukee, WI

The Third Ward writer’s loft is located in an old cream city brick tannery factory, redesigned for residential properties.

The client for this project had requested a home that reflects the history of the Third Ward and had a sophisticated approach. The space had existing timber beams that could be covered, however, in this design they were left in their natural state.

Upon the design approach, I had many ideas for this client, however, when I thought on “Sophisticated approach” more, I immediately recalibrated. His days were long and socially draining, full of interactions, so I made his space a place to unwind, after a long social day. Implementing warm and welcoming tones, vegetation at every turn, a space for reflecting, writing, and a mixology bar equipped for housing glasses and mixing tools.

The layout was inspired by the golden ratio, given that the space was a perfect rectangle. The walls were placed around the golden spiral, in order to make the path taken, the path of the spiral. Allowing it feel more ergonomic. Since this building used to be a tannery, the social furnishings were all different kinds of leather, meshing the history of the tannery into the modern time. The lighting used all had warm kelvins, emitting a warm dark glow that shinned off the cream city brick.
